Forecast Discussion:
ECMWF showing 35-45 mph
wind gusts on Sunday

We have one more mild day before temps begin the big slide downhill.  This weekend is a big area of interest because of rumors regarding a potential snow storm.  The first snow of the season is always an exciting or scary milestone (depending on who you ask).  But right now while it looks like the cold blast is a lock, the snow is NOT.

We are confident this weekend will be cold and blustery! But it looks like the ingredients for a storm will come together too late and too far offshore to bring us a big storm.  This is also a fast moving system with no blocking downstream. High pressure will quickly build in behind the storm bringing in dry air.  For now we are forecasting some showers on Saturday.  I can't rule out some snowflakes mixing in for the higher elevations but I'm not expecting any accumulation.  Either way we're watching and will keep you posted!

Weather Headlines:
  • Milder 2 days, Near 70
  • Shower late Wednesday
  • Cooler Thursday & Friday
  • Cold this weekend, stormy too?
Forecast Details:

Tomorrow: Early morning clouds break for sunshine. Warmer! High: Mid 60s to near 70 degrees.

Wednesday: Increasing clouds, chance for a late day shower. Mild. High: Mid 60s to near 70 degrees.

Thursday: Partly to mostly sunny and cooler. High: Upper 50s to near 60 degrees.

Friday: Partly cloudy and cool. High: Mid 50s.

Friday night: Mid to upper 40s around sunset for Trick or treaters!

Saturday: Cloudy, cool, raw, windy and wet with showers (rain may even mix with some wet snow, especially in the hills). High temperatures in the middle and upper 40s.

Weather Discussion:
Where Does the Low go? Look at the spread in storm
location within just one computer model.  TOO EARLY!
The next couple of days will be warmer with highs between 65 and 70 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday. But don’t get used to it!  A cold front late Wednesday will bring the chance for a shower or sprinkle followed by cooler air Thursday and beyond.

There is a lot of chatter about snow this week!  Normally, I try to avoid hyping up events that are 6 days away…for obvious reasons. Errors in forecasting grow over time and there is a big disparity between the various models that we look at.  Yes, it’s going to get cold by this weekend with high temps in the 40s.  And yes, a storm will develop near New England. But the track and intensity of this storm is still in question. For one, there is no downstream blocking that snow lovers want to see for a nice long duration event. This should be a fast mover. Plus the NAO looks like it will be trending positive (another strike for snow lovers).  The forecast hinges on the northern and southern branches of the jet stream and whether or not that energy phases and where. We’re tracking energy that has to travel all the way from Alaska!  So for now prep for a cold and windy day with the chance for some showers .  Rain could mix or even change over to some wet snow in spots (especially in the hills).  But I wouldn’t break out the snow gear just yet.

30 Weeks Preggers

Many think I'm ready to "pop" at any moment.    Everyone knows the camera adds 10 pounds.  Here's a fun fact.  During pregnancy, the camera adds 3 months! I still have 10 weeks left. Yesterday I got a tweet asking me if I was having triplets.

Today I had the most amazing glimpse at my babe to be.  My last ultrasound was at 20 weeks. And the baby looked like an alien skeleton cat.  He was all skin and bones...scary!  But he was my alien cat and I loved him just the same.

This time around, baby looked like...an actual baby!  What a treat! They estimate he weighs 3 pounds 8 ounces and will gain about half a pound a week for the rest of the pregnancy.  That puts him at over 8 pounds by the end of this pregnancy.  Oh boy!

I just read in one of my dozen baby books that I'm supposed to be interviewing pediatricians. I just want to find a Doc that will give a lollypop after shots...to the parents. ;)

Here Comes The Rain Again...And Again, And Again

Cut off low this week
Bottle up thoughts of sunshine. You’ll need to in order to make it through the week.  A cut off low will set up shop the next several days.  It’s called a cut off low because the storm will be “cut off” from the jet stream (the force that normally steers storms along). That means the storm will sit and spin Tuesday through Thursday producing lots of clouds and periods of rain.  It will not rain for three days straight.  No need to prepare the ark.  But keep the umbrella handy as waves of energy rotate around the upper level low.  Friday will be our transitional day leading up to a dry weekend with more in the way of sunshine.  By that point, we’ll deserve it!

Tonight: Cloudy, maybe a sprinkle. Low: Mid 40s.

Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers. High: lower to middle 60s.

Wednesday: Cloudy, cool and breezy with periods of rain.  High: upper 50s to around 60 degrees.
North wind at 10-20 mph.

Thursday: Cloudy with scattered showers. High: upper 50s to around 60 degrees.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, damp. High: around 60 degrees.

Saturday: Partly cloudy and dry! High: lower 60s statewide.

From 70s to 50s - Our Weekend Reality Check!

There's no need to cancel outdoor plans on Saturday.  Showers will be hit or miss. In fact,  it's not a bad day to spend outside with temps around 70 degrees for the last day in a while!  Temperatures fall off the cliff on Sunday with highs in the middle 50s and a chilly breeze.  By Monday morning a widespread frost is possible with temperatures in the 30s right down to the coast.

Next week looks a little ugly.  With a storm stuck off the coast, we'll cope with lots of clouds and waves of cold rain Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and part of Friday! Yuck.

Tonight: Increasing clouds, chance for patchy fog. Low: Low to mid 50s.

Saturday:  Clouds and some sun, chance for a passing shower. West wind at 5 to 15 mph, gusts to 20 mph. High: Near 70 degrees.

Sunday: Windy and colder. Morning clouds break for afternoon sunshine. Northwest wind at 10 to 20 mph. High: Mid to upper 50s.

Monday: Cool despite plenty of sunshine.  Some high clouds mixing in during the afternoon.  High: Upper 50s to around 60 degrees.

Tuesday: Increasing clouds with showers developing. High: Upper 50s to around 60 degrees.

Wednesday: Cool and cloudy with scattered showers. High: Upper 50s to around 60 degrees.

80 Within Reach Wednesday

Headlines:
  • Another steamy, warm day Wednesday
  • Warm & wet Thursday with showers and thunderstorms
  • Less humid Friday/Saturday
  • Big cool down Sunday & Beyond

Weather Discussion:

A little sunshine went a long way today!  High temperatures soared into the middle and upper 70s. Tomorrow will be an encore performance.

Clouds will once again roll in tonight thanks to the arrival of moisture laden air.  This means it will feel even more humid by tomorrow! Early clouds, fog and drizzle in spots Wednesday will give way to some sunny breaks.  High temperatures will soar into the middle to upper 70s again. For places that get lucky and a bit more sun, 80 degrees is within reach. An isolated shower is possible in the afternoon. But rain is more likely on Thursday.  Showers and thunderstorms will continue off and on throughout the day effectively washing away the humidity and warmth by the time the weekend rolls around.

The real chilly stuff arrives Sunday.  In fact, we might see the coolest air of the season with high temperatures in the 50s and overnight lows in the 30s.

Forecast Details:

Tonight: Becoming cloudy, fog and drizzle in spots. Low: Near 60.

Tomorrow: Chance for early fog and drizzle in spots. Otherwise warm and humid with clouds and some sunny breaks. An isolated afternoon shower. High: Mid to upper 70s.

Thursday: Periods of rain with embedded thunderstorms. Remaining warm and humid. High: Low to mid 70s.

Friday: Early morning fog. Partly cloudy, pleasant. High: Near 70 degrees.

Saturday: Early fog in spots, otherwise partly to mostly sunny. High: mid to upper 60s.

Sunday: Much colder despite lots of sunshine. High: Upper 50s.

October WARMTH!

Headlines:
  • 70s the next few days, even with lots of clouds
  • Warmest Wednesday, mid to upper 70s
  • Widespread rain/thunderstorms Thursday
  • Cooler & Drier By the weekend

Patchy fog and drizzle develop later tonight. That's the price we pay for incoming WARMTH. A strong, deep southerly flow will develop tomorrow thanks to high pressure in the western Atlantic and a storm (cut off low) stuck spinning in the midsection of the nation.  This set up will bring warmer air AND make it turn increasingly humid too!

Tomorrow looks warm despite lots of clouds.  Some brightening/breaks of sun are possible in the afternoon.  Wednesday is very similar.

Rain arrives Thursday with embedded thunderstorms. This upcoming front will have plenty of moisture to tap into…from the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf Of Mexico and perhaps even Hurricane Gonzalo. (Let me just emphasize, Hurricane Gonzalo will NOT make landfall here, we just might link up to a little of the moisture.)

Cooler, drier air will lag behind the front. So Friday will remain mild for one more day with high temps in the low 70s. The real drop off will occur over the weekend with 60s returning.
Check out the front on Thursday and how it links up to Hurricane Gonzalo
Forecast Details:

Tonight: Remaining cloudy, patchy fog, drizzle. Low: mid to upper 50s.

Tomorrow: Chance for morning fog/drizzle. Otherwise, mostly cloudy and warm. High: low to mid 70s.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, warm. Chance for a passing shower. High: mid to upper 70s.

Thursday: Showers and thunderstorms likely. High: lower 70s.

Friday:  Early morning fog breaks for partly cloudy skies. High: lower 70s.

Saturday: Early patchy fog. Otherwise, partly to mostly sunny. High: mid to upper 60s.

Cool, Wet Start To The Weekend

Rain Saturday morning.
Weather Headlines:
  • Cool, wet for Hartford Marathon. Late Clearing Saturday
  • Sunny Sunday
  • Warm Up Next Week

Steady rain moves in well after midnight and lasts through Saturday morning. Yep. That means cool, cloudy and raw conditions for the hartfird marathon.  Rain will end in the late morning to early afternoon hours.  High temperatures will struggle in the middle to upper 50s. OUCH!  I remain optimistic that we’ll get some clearing in the mid to late afternoon though.

Sunday looks like the weekend winner!  It will be comfortably cool and sunny.  Monday isn’t bad.  But there is a chance for a passing shower as a warm front approaches.  That front will help boost temps into the 70s for early next week!

Tonight: Rain moving in after midnight. Low: 40s.

Tomorrow: Morning showers, areas of rain. Partial clearing in the mid to late afternoon. High temperatures in the mid to upper 50s.

Sunday: The weekend winner! Cool despite plenty of sunshine. High temperatures in the lower to mid 60s.

Monday: Sunny start with increasing afternoon clouds. Chance for a passing shower. High temperatures in the middle 60s.

Tuesday: Warm with a mix of sun and clouds. High temperatures in the lower 70s.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy with the chance for showers. High temperatures in the middle 60s to around 70 degrees.

Pushing My (Belly) Buttons

With Matt Scott Sporting My Brand New Pregnancy "Outie"
My TV station, FOXCT,  received two scathing messages about me yesterday.  It didn’t have to do with a forecast or the way I present the weather.  Two people were highly offended by…my belly button. One of them complains about the visible silhouette of my pregnant belly. They call my wardrobe “tacky” and a “disgrace”.

Then today I saw yet another message and this one sent me over the edge.

Someone may get offended, I'm sorry but the pregnant weather lady looks terrible, the clothes she is wearing looks awful. Her belly button is sticking out and u can see it. Trust me I am not fashion statement. But whatever happened to nice, decent maternity clothes?
You know what bothers me the most? All of these complaints are from women.  Women! Aren’t we supposed to support each other? Many of these women have children. So I imagine they understand how hard this is!  Now that I’m in the third trimester, my body is changing at an alarming rate.  Getting dressed it like trying to hit a moving target. I play the “will it zipper?” game daily.  And it’s no wonder.  Last week my baby was the size of a zucchini.  This week he’s the size of cauliflower (the humorous veggie comparisons never get old).

As for obtaining  “decent maternity clothes”?  Come on.  I’m not trying to squeeze into my old leather Bebe dress.  Everything I own is from a maternity store.  None of my dresses are more than 2” above the knee.  But I refuse to pay over $100 for a dress I can only wear for 4-5 months. I’m saving money for diapers.

I feel so incredibly lucky that my pregnancy has been easy so far.  I didn’t have morning sickness.  I’m sleeping through the night. Other than fatigue and a kick in the ribs once in a while, I feel relatively normal.  My number one concern is getting my life and home ready for baby and staying healthy.  His well-being is paramount….NOT worrying about shallow commentary on my wardrobe. So let’s make a deal.  I’ll agree to tape down my belly button if you agree to cut me some slack.

Only 83 days to go!

Falling Back To Fall

Microburst in Easthampton, MA
Wind damage early this morning was confined to the northwest hills. 4,000+ power outages at one point. The big story was the microburst confirmed in East Hampton, MA. 100 mph winds, 1/4 miles wide and 1 mile long. Luckily we were spared the worst. The rest of the day was sunny and warm with temps soaring into the lower to middle 70s.

The late summer feel fades tonight as we fall back to fall.  Temperatures tomorrow will be 5-8 degrees cooler with lots of sunshine.

The weather stays dry through the day Friday.  Then the forecast gets a little wonky. A storm developing in the Mid Atlantic states will creep northeast.  But there is still a question as to how far north it nudges. Right now we’re keeping the forecast dry until Friday night with showers possible overnight and into Saturday morning.  But we still have low confidence on the timing and placement of this storm. We’ll keep an extra close eye on the forecast, especially because Saturday morning is the Hartford Marathon.

Tonight: Clear, cooler. Low: Mid to upper 40s.

Tomorrow: Cool despite plenty of sunshine. High temperatures in the lower to middle 60s.

Friday: Sunny start with clouds increasing late. High temperatures in the lower 60s. Chance for showers at night.

Saturday: Cloudy start with the chance for morning showers. Then partial clearing, mainly in the afternoon. High temperatures in the low to mid 60s.

Sunday: Cool despite plenty of sunshine. High temperatures in the lower 60s.

Monday: Cloudy with showers or a period of steady rain. High temperatures in the lower to middle 60s.

Wild Weather Overnight

A shower or two is possible tonight before midnight. But the worst is yet to come. Storms will fire up overnight, from midnight – 8 am. The worst weather will be focused 3-7 am. Some storms could be strong to severe. The biggest threat is gusty or damaging winds. But with a lot of wind shear (wind direction turning with height) there is also a small possibility for an isolated tornado in southern New England or on Long Island. This is an odd time of day for severe weather! But not unheard of.

Slow clearing will take place tomorrow after 8 am. The rest of the day looks fantastic, breezy and warm. High temperatures will soar into the middle 70s. Thursday will be about 10 degrees cooler, back to the 60s again with lots of sunshine.  A storm sliding south of Connecticut could graze the state with some showers or an area of rain late Friday into early Saturday. This is obviously a concern with the Hartford Marathon Saturday morning!  But there is still a chance the timing shifts earlier or the storm gets pushed farther south. So we’ll keep an eye on it!

Tonight: A shower in spots after midnight. Strong storms developing late. Low: 50s.

Tomorrow: Strong storms early in the morning. Slow clearing after 8 am. Warm and Breezy. High temperatures in the mid 70s.

Thursday: Cool despite plenty of sunshine. High temperatures in the middle 60s.

Friday: Increasing clouds, chance for a late day/evening shower. High temperature around 60 degrees.

Saturday: Chance for an early shower. Then clearing, becoming partly cloudy. High temperatures in the lower to middle 60s.

Sunday: Mostly sunny with high temperatures in the lower to middle 60s.

Strong Storms Wednesday Morning

RPM Forecast for Wednesday at 2:30 AM, Stormy!
Tonight will not be as cold with increasing clouds. Temperatures will remain in the 50s (instead of the 30s).

A two day warm up will get underway Tuesday. Temperatures will climb into the lower 70s which is impressive considering the mostly cloudy sky.  A shower or thunderstorm is possible during the day.

A more potent disturbance will trigger a round of strong storms early Wednesday morning (before 8 am).  Some of those storms could be severe with heavy rain, lightning and the threat for damaging winds. The rest of the day looks nice with clearing skies. Cooler air returns on Thursday.

Tonight: Increasing clouds. Low: 53-58.

Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy, chance for a shower or thunderstorm. High temperatures in the lower 70s.

Wednesday: Strong (possibly even severe) storms early in the morning. Then clouds will break for sunshine. Mild. High temperatures in the low to mid 70s.

Thursday: Cool despite plenty of sunshine. High temperatures in the middle 60s.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, chance showers. High temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, pleasant. High temperatures in the middle 60s.

50/50 Weekend

After a glorious end to the work week, the weather is heading downhill just in time for the weekend. Clouds will increase tonight with low temps in the lower to mid 50s.

This weekend will be 50/50. If you can choose when to schedule outdoor plans, Sunday is the winner. Saturday morning will start off cloudy with areas of drizzle and a few light showers. Steady rain will move in during the afternoon. An embedded thunderstorm is possible in spots with heavy rain and gusty winds. Rain will taper off Saturday night. Sunday looks gorgeous for the Southington Apple Harvest Festival. Temperatures will be on the cool side (lower 60s), despite plenty of sunshine. Fritters anyone!?

Monday remains sunny and will be a little milder with highs near 70 degrees.  The next chance for rain after tomorrow will be Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Forecast Details:

Tonight: Increasing clouds. Low:50s.

Tomorrow: Scattered light showers and drizzle in the morning. Steady rain (some heavy) developing in the afternoon. High temperatures in the mid 60s.

Sunday: Cool despite plenty of sunshine. High temperatures in the lower to middle 60s.

Monday: Mostly sunny. High temperatures in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, chance for a late day shower. Milder with high temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s.

Wednesday: Morning showers followed by some clearing. High temperatures in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.

Sun Returns Friday! Not For Long....

Clouds will quickly continue to slowly clear out after sunset causing temperatures to drop quickly, into the mid 40s to around 50 degrees.

After several damp and dreary days the sun will finally return tomorrow! Early patchy fog will give way to partly cloudy skies Friday.  With more sun than recent days temperatures will be milder, approaching 70 degrees. Enjoy the dry weather, it doesn’t last long. Rain develops on Saturday between mid morning and early afternoon from west to east.  Some will be heavy at times in the afternoon with embedded thunder possible too. Sunday looks better for outdoor plans. It will be dry and sunny but cooler.

Tonight: Clearing. Low: 45-50.

Tomorrow: Patchy fog early. Partly sunny. High temperatures in the mid 60s to around 70 degrees.

Saturday: Rain developing, heaviest during the afternoon. Chance for thunder too! High temperatures in the middle 60s.

Sunday: Cool despite plenty of sunshine. High temperatures in the lower to middle 60s.

Monday: Mostly sunny. High temperatures in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.

Tuesday: Increasing clouds. High temperatures in the lower 70s.

Slow Improvement Thursday

Rainfall totals have been all over the place today. The Hebron/Colchester area scored the jackpot with 1.5-2”+ rainfall today with a heavy rain band that set up and wouldn’t move. But many other towns scored less than a half an inch.  The heaviest rain is over.  But periods of rain and drizzle will continue through tonight before slowly tapering off.

After a soggy start to October, the weather will slowly improve Thursday. A lingering shower is possible in spots early, especially for eastern Connecticut. After a dreary morning, clouds will slowly break for some sunshine. But the clearing process will happen painfully slow. Some areas may not see sun until late in the day. For that reason, temperatures will remain in the 60s. Friday will be milder courtesy of more sunshine. The dry spell doesn’t last long. Rain returns Saturday.

Tonight: Periods of rain and drizzle. Low: 55.

Tomorrow: A leftover shower in spots during the morning. Clouds slowly break for some sun in the afternoon. High temperatures in the middle 60s.

Friday: Sunshine mixing with clouds. High temperatures in the mid 60s to around 70 degrees.

Saturday: Periods of rain, some could be locally heavy. Rain tapering off late day and at night. High temperatures in the middle to upper 60s.

Sunday: Cool despite plenty of sunshine. High temperatures in the lower to middle 60s.

Monday: A sunny start with clouds increasing as the day progresses. High temperatures in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.
